What’s Citizens Reunited?

Big Tech and its oligarchs have captured our information space, economy and politics - attacking democracy, spreading hate and centralizing power. We’re up against a tech coup: an unholy alliance of tech and state that is dismantling oversight, redefining “free speech” to advance its agenda and ushering techno-authoritarianism.

Stopping the tech coup starts here. Citizens Reunited is an online community of everyday activists and experts challenging the power of Big Tech - a place to learn, connect and act.

For years, the Citizens has delivered critical investigations and campaigns against Big Tech, and brought the world's leading experts together to share solutions. But to power an anti-Big Tech movement with teeth, we’re going further - launching a broadcast channel and online community, Citizens Reunited, as a hub for news and action.

About the Citizens

Founded in 2020 by Carole Cadwalladr, the Orwell prize’ winning investigative journalist, The Citizens is a not-for-profit journalism and campaigning organisation with a proven track record of exposing the nexus of technology, money and politics. We use storytelling to power movements that confront the unchecked power of Big Tech and governments , amplifying the voices of experts and civil society to shape the debate on tech companies’ impact on democracy.

Cambridge Analytica made clear that social media was putting our democracies at risk. Since then Big Tech and Big Data have exacerbated the problem. ‘Tech & State’ have entered an unholy alliance, feeding on the exploitation of our data. Hence, we built this organisation to not only tell stories about Big Tech’s growing political capture, but to find new and creative ways to challenge their narratives and take action against them.

We are a small team with a big network. From Nobel Laureate Maria Ressia in the Philippines, author and activist Shoshana Zuboff in the United States, Oscar-winning director Asif Kapadia in the United Kingdom and hundreds more; we channel much needed global expertise into creative output and community events, building an alternative, global public square to challenge Big Tech domination.
